Course Description

Understanding Depression

Psychotherapy can be an important part of treatment for depression. Most Psychotherapy for depression typically focuses on the thoughts, feelings, and issues happening in your life now. Psychotherapy is more than telling me, your therapist, about your problems. It means working with me to improve the way you cope with things in your life, change behaviors that are causing problems, and find solutions. But you can only seek treatment if you know what the problem is. Sadness touches us all at different times, but that’s short term. Sadness - or depressive periods - are normal, particularly when you face tough personal issues, unemployment or relationship problems. If, however, your sadness - or depressive periods - continue for more than several weeks it may be a sign of a more prolonged and serious illness – Depression. Depression can have enormous depth and staying power. Depression is chronic; and can be much more difficult to overcome. It also has nothing to do with personal weakness or defects. It is a serious mental illness which people of all ages suffer. More than half of people with depression experience difficulties functioning socially. And is reflected by increased absenteeism from school or work, fewer social contacts, poorer relationships with partners or family. In many cases, depression leads to temporary or permanent inability to work. According to the World Health Organization, around 350 million people suffer depression worldwide. Around 1 in 7 people will experience depression in their lifetime. This psycho-educational class provides information, insight and understanding of this potentially destructive illness. It will help bring you clarity on whether or not you are the ‘one in seven’ who is experiencing depression…and if you need to begin the process of seeking help.

As a Certified Psychoanalyst and Licensed Psychotherapist maintaining a private practice in New York City for almost 20 years, I can attest to the fact that there is a lack of resources specifically tailored to non-traditional clients. Clients with needs having to do with one, or all of the following: E thnicity, N ationality, R ace, I dentity, C ulture and H eritage. (ENRICH) My mission is to make it possible for anyone, anywhere, anytime, regardless of geography, to have access to my services which best suits their needs. In an effort to reach you where you are, I have made available a number of options. Though I have a deep appreciation and respect for traditional structures and methods of psychotherapy, it does not always meet the needs of today's client. The services I offer run the spectrum from online assessments if you are not quite ready to talk to someone, but want to find out more about yourself, to traditional psychotherapy, and everything in between... I have also found my "ENRICH" clients are sometimes apprehensive and uninformed about therapy...hence the following series of psycho-educational classes designed to put you at ease with issues you probably want to address but are scared to. Take the step...take a class... I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker, Psychoanalyst and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist (NY State License), in private practice in New York City.
